Microfinance - the banking of the future?

It seems now that everywhere you turn when talking about international development, you end up landing on microfinance.  It's all the rage with the kids! Well, maybe not - but I do have several friends who are working for non-profits in microfinance.  What's it all about, and does it actually work?
